How To Avoid Fires During the Holidays
The holidays should be a great time to spend with family and friends. There are over 730 house fires every year during the holiday season, don’t let your home be one of them! Here are some steps you can take to prevent a fire.
1. Turn off all appliances
Many people tend to forget that they are cooking holiday dinners and leave appliances on. Whether it be slow cookers, crock pots, air fryers or an oven, these appliances can cause damage to your property and personal items if not looked after.
2. Unplug Appliances
Unplugging appliances helps save electricity and reduces the chances of starting a fire. About 12% of fires at home are started by electrical equipment, and 85% of fatal fires are started accidentally.
3. Turning off holiday lights
Oftentimes people leave on the Christmas tree lights at night or while they're out. This can be dangerous because the tree can catch on fire if owners don't notice it drying out.
4. Have an evacuation plan
Life isn’t perfect and accidents happen. Thankfully, SERVPRO of Westminster can help you in times of need. However, you can do your part in keeping you and your family safe by creating an evacuation plan. Knowing where all the exits of the home are and having a meeting place is crucial to keeping everyone safe.
