Severity of fire damage

SERVPRO of Westminster deals with a range of fire damage in many cases. Oftentimes, some homes have soot and smoke, other times there are homes with extensive damage that need rebuilding. SERVPRO technicians are trained and certified to inspect homes and assess the damage in the property. Knowing the level of damage can help our technicians to come up with a plan to fix the damages.

  • Minor Fire Damage
    • Light to moderate smoke and soot is contained in just a portion of the building. Restoration needs include dry or wet cleaning and deodorization to walls, ceiling, floor and personal property, with little or no repainting. Very few items need to be replaced.
  • Medium Fire Damage
    • Moderate smoke and soot requires more aggressive cleaning and deodorization techniques to remove residue. More areas need repainting. Heat causes more extensive damage to surfaces and materials which may require more items to be repaired or replaced.
  • Major Fire Damage
    • Severe fire damage to contents, finished surfaces and even structural framing. If smoke has infiltrated the majority of the building, an emergency intervention like board-up of windows and doors, or roof tarping, is required right away. Personal property items will likely need to be moved out of the structure for cleaning off-site. All remaining surfaces will be cleaned and deodorized in preparation for painting and repairs.

How To Avoid Fires During the Holidays

How To Avoid Fires During the Holidays

The holidays should be a great time to spend with family and friends. There are over 730 house fires every year during the holiday season, don’t let your home be one of them! Here are some steps you can take to prevent a fire.

1. Turn off all appliances

Many people tend to forget that they are cooking holiday dinners and leave appliances on. Whether it be slow cookers, crock pots, air fryers or an oven, these appliances can cause damage to your property and personal items if not looked after.

2. Unplug Appliances

Unplugging appliances helps save electricity and reduces the chances of starting a fire. About 12% of fires at home are started by electrical equipment, and 85% of fatal fires are started accidentally.

3. Turning off holiday lights

Oftentimes people leave on the Christmas tree lights at night or while they're out. This can be dangerous because the tree can catch on fire if owners don't notice it drying out.

4. Have an evacuation plan

Life isn’t perfect and accidents happen. Thankfully, SERVPRO of Westminster can help you in times of need. However, you can do your part in keeping you and your family safe by creating an evacuation plan. Knowing where all the exits of the home are and having a meeting place is crucial to keeping everyone safe.

What items should you throw out in a home fire ?

SERVPRO of Westminster is there to help in any disaster. House fires can be dangerous if not inspected and cleaned properly. Depending on the severity of the fire, technicians may have to dispose of many things such as carpet, walls, furniture, appliances and more. However, here are some things you can throw out and help our crew.

Any food that has been exposed to extreme heat (including canned food) must be thrown out. Look for signs of unpleasant odors, bulging, and char.

Some items such as clothes may be salvaged as long as there are no damages and odors to them. However, it is extremely important to inspect the clothing of children before deciding that it could still be salvaged. Woolsey Wildfire 2018

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Westminster will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

During the summer, millions of Americans fire up their grills for a barbecue or family cookout. Life goes on, so you should be prepared for the unexpected. Here are some quick tips to stay safe during a cookout!

Tip #1: Fire Extinguisher

It is always a good idea to have a fire extinguisher near the grill or whoever is cooking. Sometimes food can catch fire and lead to a horrendous mess. Keeping a fire extinguisher will allow you to have a safer piece of mind.

Tip #2: Keep A Clean Station

Cooking can always lead to a cluttered area on and near the grill. Flammable objects, such as napkins, can cause an accidental fire to spread.

Tip #3: Keep Children Away From The Grill

Children are often curious about a lot of things. But do not allow them to apply their curiosity to dangerous things like the grill. Some good ideas to prevent children from getting hurt is baby gating the area and making sure that there isn't anything on the floor. This will prevent the kids from tripping while they are playing.

Living in California has its advantages and disadvantages. Although we have several regions in this beautiful state, we face the disadvantage of wildfires. As the climate starts changing and the heat begins to rise, our forests are at risk of catching fire. Learn how to prepare yourself and your family for this natural disaster.

Step 1: Preparing an emergency kit

An emergency kit should consist of several items such as:

  • food (canned, dried, energy bars)
  • water (two liters of water per person per day)
  • a manual can opener
  • a first aid kit
  • cash
  • copies of important family documents
  • battery powered flashlight
  • battery powered radio
  • extra batteries

Step 2: Remove fire hazards

Removing fire hazards from around your home, such as dried out branches, leaves, and debris is essential since these things can cause the fire to spread.

Step 3: Know your evacuation routes

Know your community’s local evacuation plan and identify several escape routes for your location in case roads are blocked.

Step 4: Stay informed

Monitor the weather reports provided by your local news radio and TV stations. It is always a good idea to keep a battery-powered radio with extra batteries to keep up with updates on the fire.
